last month's forgotten post

Last month we surprised our kiddos and took them to the beach for a few days.
It'd been a while since we'd visited our favorite spot. We were overdue.
J had been traveling quite a bit and the kiddos had fall break, so getting away together seemed appropriate.

Our master plan involved picking J up at the airport from a four day trip and heading straight to the beach. This meant I was packing for all five of us without the kiddos knowing. It was tricky but I managed. I pulled the cranky card, which can be easy after J's been gone for days. I sent all three to their rooms for 30 minutes-told them they could have electronic time and "not to bother me." You better believe they soaked it up.  And can you believe that not one of them came out to tell me their time had exceeded 30 minutes? Quickly 30 minutes turned to 45...and then the car was packed.

B had the most genuine response when he discovered where we were headed. "Mom, it looks like we're driving to the beach."
"It does? Maybe we should go? Would you like that? J, let's take them to the beach!"
"YEAH!"

The back seat passengers expressed different emotions as their social calendars were booked. Their responses were just as I had expected. However, a two hour nap and road trip snacks changed their attitudes and soon they were eager to arrive.

However we're not fools. We like to spend time with our friends as much as they do.
The second surprise was going to take place the next day as they were playing on the beach. Two other families were going to be joining in the fun. We'd booked the same hotel and had arranged to spend a few days together-again, without the kiddos knowing.

So much fun crammed into a few days. A lot of laughter. The biggest pizza we'd ever seen. Seriously, it hardly fit through the door. Late night hotel walks. 1,000 Instagram pics from the tweens. A few beers. And the realization our family of five is much more joyful in a beach house versus a hotel room. Yikes.

But, the beach can cure almost anything...
